Project Evaluation

Throughout this project I have researched in to both contemporary and historical designers, including Andrew Byrom and Max Miedinger. The designer that impacted me the most for this project was Andrew Byrom, a graphic designer who also specializes in typography. He explains how he see’s different fonts within everyday objects and demonstrates how he develops the concept in to a final piece typographic work.

I also gained inspiration from a blog on typography, in which a photographer has captured images of objects which take the shape of different letters. I later experimented with this technique.

During this project I experimented using different objects to create fonts. The most successful experiment was my book font. This was inspired by Andrew Byrom also.

I believe that my time management on this project hasn’t been as efficient as I was initially hoping. I believe this is mainly due to getting distracted and not focusing as well as I could have. To resolve this on my next project I am going to stick to a strict schedule, and be sure to get all of my reflective, FMP blog and sketchbooks etc. posted on time.

I was pleased with my experimentation throughout this project, as I feel I have created some strong pieces of art such as my book font and final piece. I enjoyed using these different materials as I am normally more digital based, and was good to get more practical with my work.

I believe my organization began to deteriorate towards the end of the project, mainly because of the stress of creating a portfolio and having interviews. I am looking forward to the next project where I can focus and dedicate myself solely to the project.

I learnt a great deal from this project, mainly relating to typography such as kerning, serifs etc. I also learnt screen printing more in depth which I also enjoyed. I believe everything I have learnt from this project will definitely come in handy in the future.

On future projects I am going to make sure to manage my time more efficiently and stick to a strict schedule in order to meet set deadlines.

This project has made me realize how important my understanding of illustrator is, and if I want to further my career as a designer I will have to learn this software, especially for creating typographic pieces of art.

I believe that my final piece is innovative because I have incorporated many different materials which relate to Kendal, and created a final piece which depicts both industry and history of the town.

Go Local Exhibition
Overall, I am very pleased with the outcome of this project and also the outcome of the exhibition. Everyone involved produced very strong work, and for a lot of them this was there first ever exhibition.
My final piece for this exhibition will definitely be going in my portfolio, and I am looking forward to receiving my piece back after the exhibition to get it framed.

A letter e which I found within an object. I decided to elaborate on this idea, and ended up with a rather interesting looking font.

Final Piece

After a very tedious week I can Proudly say I have completed my final piece. I am very pleased with the outcome, as initially I was sceptical on the outcome of this piece. But I think that the letters work  well, and the quote “Wool Is My Bread” is fairly successful in my opinion. I Have attached two images with two different compositions, as I am still uncertain on which one I prefer, although I am being drawn more to the design which was inspired by an opticians test.

Final Piece

Here are some images taken today demonstrating how I constructed my letter faces from the different objects. I first decided upon a font to use and then printed off an outline of the letter face, which left me with a guideline of the font. I then began filling the inside of the template with my chosen materials.

At first I found this technique to be quite tedious, but with a bit of self motivation and patients I managed to create some rather successful results, and am looking forward to seeing the final outcome of these piece’s.

My Concept!

Using the optitian style layout, I am going to create individual fonts/letters which will be made by using objects from or relating to Kendal and graphically manipulate them in to a large A0 sized poster ready to be displayed for next weeks exhibition. So far I have identified some various materials and objects I could use in these designs.

These include…

  • Kendal Mint Cake white&brown
  • Stone (representing Kendal Castle)
  • Grass (representing country)
  • wood/twigg’s etc
  • Plants
  • Meat (representing local trade)
  • Vegtables/fruit (representing Kendal market)
  • Paint (Representing George Romney)
I will think more about this concept, and try research in to other materials which I can successfully use and tye in with the Local theme.

Shield Development

I dedicated to develop the shield design further after some thought. Here and are 2 different black and white designs, and also one in the original colours of the Kendal Shield of arms. My personal favourite is between the 2 black and white images. The image on the right has strong contrasting blacks, where as the the shield on the left is simple, clean and bold. I will experiment with these on my final image which I produce and gather feedback, and develop the final design depending on the critique.

I decided to try and redesign the Kendal Shield of Arms, but decided against the idea due to the frustration and aesthetics of the shield. I decided to upload the image anyway, just to show some development.

The Times Typography

Interesting concept behind the times logo…

This was an idea which I came up with when experimenting with different compositions. I really don’t like this idea but i thought i’d post it and show my development anyway!
